So if I'm reading right, the fuel gauge, voltmeter, oil pressure gauge, temp guage, speedometer, and tachometer are all in-op?

The older XJs had a fusible link that may have recieved a voltage spike and melted. Don't know if the later 98s Jeep vehicles had those as well.

If yours has one (still not sure on that) it would be on the passenger side fenderwell near the PDC. Thats where mine are. They just look like a regular wire with a fat spot in the wire.

97+'s are very prone to the clusters working sporadically....it's because the connections on the back of the cluster have corrosion on them. Some people can get away with pushing in on the cluster and get them to come back, to buy some more time before pulling the cluster out. Ultimately you need to pull the cluster out, and clean all the connections on the back.

May just be a coincidence that it happened after you unhooked the battery.

Hmm.. yeah ill try to push on the cluster. now that i think about it, the old exhaust system required alot of banging (bfh) to get off ...

I think the two problems are unrelated. Exhaust was probably due tio road salt or the like while the cluster corrosion is due to humidity in the air.
