Default 98 XJ crankshaft sensor

My 98 Sport lights up the CEL about once per month and keeps right on going without issues. It idles fine, accelerates fine, but it reports a P1391 error. I clear it and it seems to not come up again for a few weeks. IT seems to especially come on when I idle it for 10 minutes or more.

I tried a couple of cheap crank sensors and returned them as they both made the Jeep accelerate very badly, so I finally bought a new Mopar crank sensor. After a few minutes of installing the Mopar crank sensor, the CEL came up again with P1391.

Any ideas what else might cause the P1391? I already changed the camshaft sensor under the distributor cap (which is also called some kind of coil on this model), and I changed both Oxygen sensors. The computer was replaced earlier this year before I bought the Jeep, and the tag on it seems to indicate it was programmed for this VIN.

Overall I love this machine, and it has only 118K miles. Everything else seems to be in great shape, but I am nervous about taking out on longer trips until I solve the CEL problem.

I kept my old working crank sensor as it apparently was just fine.

Thanks for any insight!

GS

Well first did you get the cam sensor from mopar? if not get one, if you did you probably have a open or a short in the harness somewhere. I would visually inspect near the two connectors.

unfortunately did not get Mopar cam sensor. It had gone out cold and had to tow Jeep to mechanic, who replaced the cam sensor with one from Autozone. I'll call the Jeep dealer to see what they charge for the cam sensor. I am thinking the cam sensor that went out was the original one, as I was able to look up the part number off the old sensor. However, when that sensor went out, I was getting a different CEL code (I think it was P0340).

Thanks!

The code you have now is intermmitent loss of CAM OR CRANK signal
