Sorry for the late response. I just started college.... Mindf*cked.....
I guess I can change the filter in the next weekend or two. It is a year old because the oil looks pretty darn good still. I don't buy that 3K miles bs. Secondly, my wife's Ford Ranger (96'-engine by Mazda mind you) has 300K miles on it, It has had maybe TWO oil changes in the 9 years we've been married. She just never did um (chick thing I guess). That truck is a vampire and runs AMAZING! It is crazy really. An abnormality really-but it thinks it's a Mazda.
I'd never do that to the XJ, but I moved states and started school in these past few months so it really hasn't been a priority right now. If the oil looked dark, I would feel completely different. I do plan on doing the O/C within two weeks. I'll let you know if it went away if you are still following this.

There is no Mazda motor in your 96 Ranger.
There was a choice of three in 1996:
4.0 V6, the "cologne" V6 from Ford of Germany,
3.0, the Ford "Vulcan" V6, produced in Lima OH, or
2.3, OHC 4, also produced by Ford in Lima. The old Pinto motor, lol
The '96 Mazda version of this truck used the Ford engines, not vice-versa.
If you are only going to change oil every 4.5 years, please do not buy an XJ. There are a dwindling number of them left and ruining one on purpose isn't funny.

The 4.0L is not a tight clean engine you want to run extended OCIs in. It's a tractor from the 60s. 5k miles is fine if your rings don't let too much gas through but nothing longer unless you have a lab test your oil to prove it.
Also your wife might want to seriously start saving for a new engine.

Salad, good perspective! Yeah, she has had this thing for a while and wouldn't weep one bit when it dies (the Ranger). It just runs so freaking well and gets amazing gas mileage. We can't get rid of it until it breaks. My buddy has a similar year Ranger and has nothing but good stuff to say about his too

I believe all three of my ex-rangers are still running around town all rotted out, probably well over 300K on all of them. Can't kill that motor.
Now go change your oil and filter, lol.

Oil filter has nothing to do with piston slap. The pistons were simply a bit too small in some of these motors, and they rattle around in the cylinders until the pistons get hot and expand to tighten up the clearances.
The early GM Vortec 5.3's were notorious for the same issue.

The Renix era Jeeps were not known for piston slap. That came along with the HO motor.

Lack of oil pressure on start up will cause "valvetrain rattle", not piston slap.

Or have only you determined that from your computer monitor?
Aren't we obligated to get to the root cause of a problem before shotgunning answers? Explore a few options?

Piston slap is present on start up and a fair while after that until the engine warms. You don't get piston slap for only a short period of time like you do valve train oil starvation.
