Default '99 Crank, no start after overheating

  • I was driving on the highway and the Jeep started to loose power, sputter and bog down. I was close to the exit so I was able to get it on the surface street where it died when I stopped at the light. I got it pushed into a nearby parking lot and tried to start it after let it sit for about 15 minutes with no luck, so towed it home.
  • I popped the hood and found that the lower radiator hose had come loose. So, I refilled the coolant, got it started again and let it run for about 20 minutes while I burped it. It seemed to run fine.
  • Took it out for a test drive and it ran a little rough, but not crazy and by the time I got it home check engine light came on. Tested and got the P0301.
  • I didn't have time to mess with it so it sat for about 3 weeks. When I went to start it the battery was completely dead.
  • I put a new battery in it, checked fuses, unplugged and reconnected the CPS, and checked coolant and didn't see any signs of oil.
  • I pulled plug 1 and didn't see any signs of oil or coolant, it had some carbon build up, but nothing crazy.
  • I checked the oil and it was way over the full line, like almost half-way up the dipstick. I had just changed the oil a couple of months ago with 6 quarts of oil (and replaced the oil pressure sensore).
  • Now it cranks, but it doesn't even act like it's going to start.

Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure if the overheating would cause this unless something got damaged. However, if your engine is swimming in oil as you state that it is could it have coated the spark plugs? If they get coated in oil it could lead them to not sparking, thus, no start.

When you checked its oil levels and saw it was "way over" what are we talking about here? Assuming the engine was cold when you checked it? If it was cold and it was heavily over the MAX limit on your stick there and it was so while driving there could be a serious issue...though if it is cranking maybe not. Too much oil in an engine by a large amount can cause bubbles in the oil that can, given enough of them and time, cause an engine to fail as if it had no oil in it at all.

I'd start with the easy stuff again, go back over checking your CPS, check the starter, fuses, relays and such, while you're at it re-drain and fill the oil to make double sure its at proper levels.
If none of that helps, might be time to start checking for shorts, check for leaks around the head-gasket, fuel injectors.
Hope some of this helps!

I checked plug one and there was no oil.

The oil was about half way up the dipstick. I know I didn't over-fill it when I changed the oil, so I'm puzzled as to why it would be reading so high.

Did you notice any burning smells (beyond the coolant blowout) before the issues started and it turned into a no-start?
Have you checked for oil in funny places like air filters or outside the header cover?
Have you tried to check the Automatic Shutdown Relay? Could have tripped it when it overheated maybe? (Not sure if that would trip it but also not ruling anything out)
Could you be having an issue in your PCM?
Could be a bad injector on the misfiring cylinder (P0301 code), might try swapping that injector to a different spot and see if it throws the code for the cylinder you place it on.

Given that it overheated and its showing a misfire with no-start, you could have blown a head-gasket, or damaged the engine in some way...

There does seem to be quite a bit more oil/grease around the valve cover area, but I'm not sure about the head gasket.

No other indications before that.

I'd cover your basics again plus the bits I've suggested if for no other reason than to cross them off, but if you are seeing residue around the valve cover area and you can confirm it to be oil you might try cleaning the area up as best you can and see if you can locate a leak. Here is to hoping that its something simple or just the head gasket is all it is.
