99 XJ starts - then dies. No idle unless holding gas pedal
#17
Iac is a usual culprit as discussed.
However +1 for a bad battery, short or intermittent connection. The alternator at idle if the battery or connection is bad doesn't provide enough juice for good spark. Jeeps require a good battery to idke. Standing on the gas the alternator puts out just enough to keep it alive until the battery tops up. You may even need to drive it without letting off the gas at lights for a time.
My Jeep used to do this after every jump start. After swapping the battery and cleaning connections, grounds and IAC, never happened again.
If the idle isn't smooth and it's hunting around it's prob iac. They get filthy.
