Default 99 XJ throttle stuck

Driving my new to me 99 XJ stepped on it hard to pass, and the throttle stuck open. I got off the road and shut down, restarted it was normal.
Next time I stepped on it it did the same thing. The throttle cable seems to be free and not sticking.
The previous owner put a K&N filter on it.
My wife is a little worried about driving it now, so any help would be appreciated.

Check cruiser54's tips on what to do to a new to you xj. Good chance they didn't do any maintenance recently before you bought it. His list of tips is cheap if not free and will seriously decrease chances of multiple problems. It's the Bible on this site.

PS

There's a write up and you tube videos on cable adjustment. YouTube is your new friend. We love taping ourselves fixing things after 6 beers.
