I would get a new compressor as these guys say, but you can buy time with an AC bypass pulley. Someone does tell you early on and I can speak from experience. The compressor is really expensive, but easy to install, then go get it PROFESSIONALLY recharged. Its worth the money, they will oil it and evacuate the system, etc.
At the end of the day, the bad compressor costs 500 or more bucks to fix, so a $30 bypass pulley will buy you infinite time. Time without AC, but time none the less.

Cost me $100 for the swap. Would have been $240 for the swap & recharge. Still not bad.
