Default AC not working - works when engine bay got wet?

Hello! I somewhat recently picked up a 2001 2-Door XJ with a 5 speed, and have been loving getting it fixed up and driving it around, but I ran into a weird situation yesterday and am hoping someone more familiar with these cars can help point me in the right direction.

The AC hasn’t worked since I bought it; PO said it was intermittent. I’ve noticed that it might cycle once when you first turn it on, but the compressor doesn’t kick in after that. Yesterday, however, I decided to carefully spray down the engine/engine bay, and next thing I know, the AC is working perfectly. Once the engine dried out, it didn’t work anymore. Not sure if the water completed some sort of short circuit or something else, but AC is something I’m not very familiar with, and I’m also not very familiar with this vehicle yet either.

Any suggestions as far as where to look/what to do would be awesome.

Thanks!
