Default ac system on 2000 xj

[QUOTE] question on ac . just recently serviced . mechanic has worked on jeep before. he added the correct amount of refrigerant. and it does cool nicely. the problem is initial start. start engine, fine, engage ac and it will sqeel for a short time. a new belt was installed when ac was worked on. i assume he adjusted the correct tension.volt output is right.no over-heating. the sqeel does seem to go away after warm-up.any thoughts please.

I had the squealing belt also—especially when the engine was cold and A/C running. I am amazed how tight the belt has to be in order to run effectively. Try increasing the tension, good luck.

I am with RAGordy on this one.
My '00 seems to be particular about the belt tension.
The "Yeah that looks about right" method doesn't really seem to work.
My '96 that I used to own seemed fine with it though. LOL.
So much so that I bought one of those Krikit II tension gauges.
IIRC a used belt should be set at 140 to 160.
A new belt 180 to 200.
Also if IIRC a used belt is one that has been run for 15 minutes or more.
I always use the low end of those specs.
When I first got the gauge I set the tension with the "Yeah that looks about right" method.
Then checked with the gauge.
According to the gauge I was 40 lbs low so......

Usually belt tension or moisture on the belt.
Unless your AC clutch is on the way out..
