I had the same problem with super high idle when I broke that plastic spring retainer. The spring is keeping the throttle body open because the plastic is no longer holding it against the metal. I just zip-tied the plastic thing to the metal bracket. Idled back to normal. Can post a pic if you want

I already took the old cable out. It's pretty busted up so it won't be going back in lol.

And the only reason you took the old one out was because if the broken plastic thing?

Yes the broken plastic thing that made me idle at 3500rpms.

There's slack in the new cable that goes away if I press on the throttle body so I'm going to go with weak return spring and get a new throttle body.

In hindsight, there is much easier ways to make your own new version of that plastic thing. I wish I wouldve seen this thread earlier, I would have shown you what I did. However I do now recommend a weak return spring because of just that. It'll give you weak return on the throttle. And why do you feel a new throttle body is necessary?

It isn't. I could probably find a rebuilt kit somewhere but I wanted to get a bigger one anyways so may as well do it now.

Why do you feel that it needs to be rebuilt? I'm all for you getting a larger throttle body. but remember, when increasing flow into the engine (larger TB, CAI, new intake mani etc.) , you always want to increase flow out of the engine also. (Exhaust manifold, exhaust, etc.) If you want to see an actual power gain

Unless you know of a way to tighten up the return spring on the tb I have then I'd either have to do a rebuilt or buy a new one since the spring is weak.

What year is your xj? Can you take a picture of your return spring and how it is mounted/retained?
