adding an oil cooler

Yeah I know they have them from other people saying the same thing but they refused to even look. Just a quick no from both parts monkeys.

yup when you have a good place it rocks when they are not good it sucks. the nice thing with the autozone and napa near me is that there is also the warehouse near as well so even if i need to order the stuff i get it with in about 2 hours even less if i just drive the 10 or so miles and get it my self

I'm not sure how to hook an oil temp gauge up on a Cherokee. Or where to hook it for that matter. In the old days I remember my Dad having one that I thought he hooked into his oil pan... That was back in the mid 70's so it's a distant memory. I will do some research but in the mean time maybe someone else might know.
Mike
Where would you hook a transmission temperature gauge up on an AW4?

Most of the guys at my local O'Reillys know me and that is really great when you are looking for some odd-ball piece that you have changed out with some other manufacturers part. Being able to say.. okay I need this but a half inch longer and not having them say.. well what does that come off of. Is great.

Good ideas on temp Gauge hookup. Looks like everyone thinks a "T" fitting in line is the way to go.
Here is one way a1 could use his new in-line temperature gauge to verify the results of his new oil cooler.
1. Install the "T" fitting for the gauge on the outgoing line from the adapter near the oil filter. Or, if that's not a good spot install it near the inlet on the oil cooler. Either way he wants to see the outgoing temperature of his oil from the engine before going through the cooler. Document results.
2. Re-hook the "T" on the return line from the oil cooler, either near the cooler or at the adapter. Whichever is easier. Document results.
This will give him data to verify the gains made by installing the oil cooler. We are interested in the Delta T (Which is Temperature Change) by adding in the cooler.
As I said earlier the water temp gauge is not an accurate way to gauge this since it is preset to open at 195 degrees if he has a 195 stat.
Data, Data, Data!

not really i don't think it pulls enough heat out with it but i could feel the inlet and outlet temps with my hands and there was a pretty big difference. plus i have not seen a loss of pressure and i gained one more quart of oil capacity so that is nice

Back when I was mud racing, there was kit from Autometer that included a weldable bung. So we would weld it right into the pan. But a T-fitting in the output to the radiator cooler for the tranny would work. Some months back 4-Wheel adventures had an install on a tranny temp kit in an old work truck. IIRC, the kit had the T-type fitting in it. I believe it was from AutoMeter.

well its been a few days and still no leaks. i have seen nothing on the guages as far as change in either pressure or temp. so if anybody else wants to do this i recommend doing it especially if your rig is mostly trail like mine and could use the extra oil and cooler oil

Pics would be nice.
Both my ZJ and WJ have factory oil coolers, and I was wondering if yours has a check valve/bypass in the event the cooler gets a hole knocked in it? That would prevent the engine's running out of oil before you saw the gauge bottom out. Just curious.
