adding an oil cooler

I obviously have to much time on my hands but I was wondering.....When you do an oil change, will the oil thats in the cooler drain or stay in the system like the oil does in the filter???

the way it is setup it drains into the filter adapter and back into the pan there may be a little bit in the cooler but not enough to make a difference

OK so oil is supposed to operate at a certain temperature. The problem with oil is not that it thins as it heats as much as the fact that its thick when its cold. Hot oil is doin what its supposed too. Cold oil doesn't protect an engine. thats why we have come up with multi weight oils like 5-40 it acts like 5w when its cold and 40 when its hot. If you are cooling your oil won't it degrade its ability to protect your engine.
I know there are oil coolers on commercial vehicles and I'm not bad talking your mod at all. Very intuitive upgrade but I want one and I don't know why.

I read the Bobtheoilguy information on the website. Very good stuff... The main cause of degredation to an oil is heat so a1 should not have this issue in theory. I believe his oil will get up to the proper temperature to "burn off" the crap that gets in it before it circulates through his cooler and operate at the correct temperature so that the viscosity rates function as intended but I do not claim to be an expert in that area. What I was hoping to find on the web site you listed was the optimal operating ranges for oils. If a1 had data on his change we would know if it's still running in the optimal temperature range for his Mobile 1. I think he may be hooking up a temp gauge to collect data. They have a forum there that I did not read maybe a1 could post his modification there where the experts are.

yup it does not change the temp by more then maybe 20 to 40 degrees and it will warn right back up as it goes back to the motor. the point of this mod is that it helps the oil from breaking down so fast and keeps it at a reasonable temp and not to hot i would not use a larger cooler it may cool to much. plus this lets me add another quart of oil and we all know that more oil = happy motor

i am just guessing by the way it feels from touching to input versus out put but it is hard to tell with out a before and after so i will not know for sure. but i do know it does work and does cool the oil when in use and in my area where during winter it is in the 70 i don't think it will get that cold but during the summer when it is 115 it will help keep me safer for sure

I was looking at the upper fire wall on mine and there is that hollow space behind it under the cowl. Is that where the air intake is for the cabin air? I was wondering if that area could be used to exit hot air? Maybe by cutting a couple 3 or 4" holes in the firewall, reinforcing the area and ducting the hot air up and out the cowl... I guess if that's where the cabin air comes in that might allow fumes to come inside... Just brainstorming...
If that is the air intake wouldn't a cowl hood also allow and fumes and heat to come into the cabin???

nope i live in sanbernardino the hottest arm pit of California. no it may get to like 60 ish some days but a few years ago it was 90 for Christmas. so yeah i don't think i need to worry about over cooling. and 4.3l xj post up the pics when you get a chance i like your idea of how to mount it

i have been all over the land here and yup i have been there to. one of my favorite places is calico ghost town trails right now very extreme trails there. and we have been hitting the arrow head big bear trails a lot latley

Nice that will be exciting to see. Did you say you have a temperature indicator on yours? It would be interesting to see what it runs with the cooler fan on and off.

You bring up a valid point about fumes. It is necessary to have your engine in repair, exhaust sealed etc.
