Default Advice on gears and lockers

I have a 98 that is currently a daily driver but soon to be parked as a dedicated wheeler. Well I may still need to use it from time to time for random hauling of junk or what have you but won't be my only transportation. I have a 5.5 long arm lift and just went up to 35's from 33's because I am going to give her 2 more inches skyward! So I have been sitting on an old Dana 44 axle from an 89 I believe. It should bolt right up but I want to do gears and lockers at the same time. I have a Dana 30 in the front and want to lock that up too. Any good ideas? This jeep will be past down from my hands, I will never sell it so I always insist on heavy duty high quality but I'm not made of money at the same time if ya catch my snow drift???

Pair of Aussie lockers and some 4.88 gears would do you solid.

yep the 4.88s would be good from what i have read. Also a swap to some 760 ujoints in the d30. If you have 297s then it is a direct swap. If not then ironrockoffroad has the inner axle shafts to swap over. Hope this helps some.

4.88 would be good everyone likes aussie never delt with em dont know anything on em iv always liked ox lockers they have extremly tough carriers

If you are going to 4.88 gears. I would spend the extra money while you have the axle apart for the gear change and install full lockers instead, of the lunch box lockers.

full lockers makes sure the wheels always turn at the same speed. An Aussie locker makes sure that one wheel can never spin slower than the driven wheel, so it will always spin both, but still allows the outside wheel to coast faster around turns on pavement.

There's this one company, Lincoln electric, they make good lockers. Weld them suckers up. But that's only good for a dedicated trail rig on a budget. Not good for dd use

a locker/spool replaces the differential. a spool is not a diff. a locker plays both roles.

spool - locks the shafts together with no slip, chirps on turns and can cause some abnormal tire wear. also more abusive ont he drive train when on pavement.

locker - locks the axles together under power like a spool would, but allows minimal slip when on deceleration/coast. so when making turns the tires can spin at different speeds making it still drive smooth on the street and tires wear more normaly. there when you need it and not when you dont as i like to think of it.

"lunchbox locker" - removes your spider gears and replaces them with a locking unit still using your carrier, and smaller parts.

"full locker" - replaces your carrier and is a whole unit (making it stronger, in most cases)

both serve the same function, different ways of doing it and some better fore some people. $$ is the biggest factor. I like detrots, and ox lockers. but they are all I have used and never had an issue.

Now locker and full locker seem the same to me and didnt make sebse to me as i understand a locker or full locker is when you want your tires to equally produce power you push a switch and it locks or when you dont need it unlock and acts as if it was stock

Lunchbox lockers, like the aussie, are always on whenever there is being power applied. Full case lockers are often selectable, as in ox (cable operated) arb (air operated) and the ected or something like that, which is electric. When they are locked, they all serve the same purpose with the full case ones being stronger. The cost difference is quite significant though.

Yes since this will still be driven on the road at times I will be going with a true locker not a lunchbox style probably should have posted that originally. What do people like best?
