aFe Air Intake System For The 1991-2001 Jeep Cherokee (XJ) with I6-4.0L
While searching for a wiring diagram for 2001 XJ, I stumbled upon this:
http://toyotareleases.com/view-release.php?id=407
Which wasn’t that dissimilar to the Rusty’s Airtube setup I had just purchased:
The article states that “The one-piece housing helps keep hot engine air away from the intake” which gave me an idea. I dug the stock airbox out of the trash and decided to make my own heat shield housing.
Here’s what I bought:
Some hose $4.40
2 small hose clamps $2.10
1 medium hose clamp $1.45
Total $7.95
And here’s a pictorial of what I did (its pretty straight forward):
What I started with
Marking
Cutting
Fitting
Install
What I had left
So my question is: If I were able to find some hood vents would it be a bad idea to install them to force air into the compartmental area I just made? I'm also worried about rain. Installing them the reverse direction would stop the filter from getting soaked and provide a good way for air to exit but this setup limits the in-flow of cold air. What do you guys think?

Dude to be honest I think what you have done has already gone way passed what is needed and although it "in theory" helps the more you do the result I have seen for even the best setups are so small it is just a waste of time. Stay with what you got and move on. ot tring to be a dick it's just 1-5 HP in the XJ is Nothing . But very innovative!

Well the more I think about it the more I think its a **** design. The best way to do it would probably be with some sheet metal and fit the shield around the CAI instead of the CAI around the shield (like I did). It was kind of a whim, I can also unbolt and do it over if I get another hair up my ***.

Nice! I already did the same, must say though yours looks a little more planned out lol, as for hood vents im not sure, but i was pondering on somehow routing up air from underneath and enclosing the filter/shield with plexiglass or something of the sort, just making sure that theres no way for water to get up to the filter system if i decide to go in some deeper water... just something to force/route the air into the general area...and being enclosed would keep it "cold"...idk maybe a new angle on the idea

But yeah, I really don't want to hydrolock the engine just because I'm driving in the rain....
