Yeah I would most likely buy a shortblock since i have a fresh head from CCW on there now. I did check the rockers no noise from the top of the valvetrain so im guessing its in the lifters so changing oil is my next step.

I'm pretty sure I blew my head gasket last night. Probably going to replace it over the weekend. About how long does it take? With correct tools and parts and a little mechanical knowledge.

Might as well figure on taking an afternoon for it. Just take your time bag your bolts for each part in case somthing comes up and you have to leave it for a bit, also you might as well plan to flush your motor and rad and check everthing else on it out while you have it open and lots of room around it.

Well im pretty sure its an oil volume issue. If I put the brake on and bring the RPM's up it clatters till you get around 1200rpm and then goes whisper quiet. Leads me to believe the thicker oil just isnt flowing fast enough so here to hoping 10w-30 does the trick. Assuming the thinner oil still holds a decent hot idle oil pressure, but i would assume it should if not bumping the idle up a bit always helps.

I tried heavier oil once and boy it made mine clatter terriable so I went back to 10w30,heavy oil is for a motor that is wore out wicked bad.

VW's have a issue with noisy lifters after oil changes and head work... only way we have found to pump them up... 2nd gear... floor it till red line... then let off gass... then back on to red line then off ... after half a dozen times... that usally shuts them up... Might work on jeeps engines to...

Thanks Rich. I kind of planned on that anyhow. It's a great everyday/project first jeep. I've been working on cars and stuff for awhile. Did it in the Marines for 12 years as well. Just not super familiar with the 4.0. Gonna soak it down with lots of PB Blaster first. RUST!!! UGH! Any things to look for while i'm in there? Theres no coolant in the oil and it didn't get over 195. I just replaced the rad, overflow bottle, thermostat, put a 92thermostat housing on with a petcock in it to make burping a little easier! LOL! Ready to get a aluminum overflow with a regular rad cap on it and call it a day!
