Default Aftermarket Plastic Fender Liners Any Good?

Anyone buy aftermarket plastic (replacement) front inner fender liners? How do they look and fit? I'm looking at the ones for 84-92 XJ's. Thanks!

Hmm I'm curious as well. Looks like it's much cheaper than I expceted. I could use a new set for my 95 both are gone.

They're even cheaper from Advance auto (online). Like $30 a pr. Just drop the part numbers in their website.

Hard to go wrong unless they totally suck. Hard to gauge much from those small pics.

Get even cheaper with one of their promo codes. And free shipping if you buy both. Get on their email list. Can't even get them that cheap at RockAuto. I checked. Those style part numbers CH1248106 and CH1249106 are common for a lot of Jeep parts. Usually pretty cheap too. Can't comment on these but I bought rear bumper caps for my '00 with the same style part number. Also cheap. They were fine. I can't tell the difference between the faded factory ones that I replaced and those.

Looks like 13 dollars each though Rock Auto 20 each though Amazon. Probably evens out with shipping.

Got mine for my 86 thru rock auto. IMO, they suck. maybe i just quit on them to soon or didn't have the patience to fit them with the factory fender flares. I tossed them in the back yard and never looked back. next move will be to the dumpster.

Like I said in my post, I may have quit on them to soon.

Nothing lined up with the fender flare in place. I think they are supposed to sandwich between the flare halves. If you have your flares off the vehicle you might have a fighting chance. I had just redone my flares and didn't want take them off again plus, I was going to have the trim off the front edge behind my aftermarket bumper, which I expected.

The flares themselves are very flimsy. They are shipped to you rolled up in a box if that tells you anything. They definitely are not factory quality.

Summary thought. If you have your fender flares off already and a stock front bumper they will probably fit ok. I really don't know about the holes lining up for the push pins since I quit on the job. I may give them a try on one of my parts xj's that I have already pulled the flares off of.

Just know that it is going to be a project before you start.

You bring up a great point about getting them to fit 'under' the edge of the flares w/o removing them. I hadn't thought about that. That could potentially make installing them a lot more work than initially thought about. If the flare brackets' studs are really rusty, they often break off (when trying to remove the flares) ...and then ya either have to drill out and weld in bolts, or buy new brackets. That could make what seems like and easy job much more work. Thanks for the FYI.

I may still order a set and see how they go. Mine have become brittle with age and a few pieces literally broke apart in my hands when I touched them! I was surprised.

I was at a salvage yard recently looking for decent inner fender liners for an early ’90’s XJ. Did a bit of research first and it seems that most aftermarket liners are not a great fit. The following may be useful. https://comancheclub.com/topic/54088...enders/?page=2

I checked with my local Chrysler parts department. They can get the right side but the left is discontinued. List price for the right side, p/n 55027152, is $70 but I usually can get a decent discount by asking. Still kind of pricy.

From what I saw at the salvage yard it seems that there were some differences in the forward section of fender liners between the ’94 and ’96 XJ’s that I was looking at but I didn’t get a good comparison. They are a bit of a chore to get out. The plastic clips come out easily but there are also a number of studs that are part of retainer plates along the fender opening that protrude into the wheelhouse and the nuts are typically rusted on. I had to break most off to get the liner out. After all that I was not happy with the condition of the liner. If anyone has found a good fitting solution I would like to hear about it.

Thanks for the good info.
Well .....I already bought a pr of inner fender liners, but haven't taken them out of the box yet. For $30 a pr (incl shipping), I figured they were worth a looky. But it's nice to know new ones are avail for R side at least. The plastic itself on mine hasn't aged well. The inner liners just break apart into small pieces, it's quite amazing. You don't often see plastic break like that. Therefore I didn't even bother with a junk yard (in my case). But if these don't fit well, I probably will check out the yard or buy a new Rt side. For guys buying new aftermarket ones, there are different part numbers for later yr XJ's. A guy definitely needs to make sure he orders the 'right' ones for your year.

I'll give feedback on fit, etc in a week or so when I go to install them.

I ordered a set from RockAuto since I ordered a few other parts from them and got them in right before we left for a trip so I'll be putting them on this up coming week. They're flexible and look like they'll go in well. We will see. You definitely have to take the fender flares off to fit them in properly at least going by my previous shenanigans with fender liners.

There's a ton of void space in these fenders so if you want to mount anything in there like a small air tank or something now would be the time. Amazingly all of the push grommets are still in my fender wells from the previous fender liners. The POs didn't take them out they simply aged got hard and broke out in pieces it looks like.

Thanks "Jeepwalker" and "downs". Hope your installs go effortlessly. Looking forward to hearing about the results. I don’t think you will have to remove the exterior flares unless the retainers that contain the studs are rotted and/or the studs break off during liner removal. I believe the flares snap onto the retainers but I am interested in what you find. I recall that the front edge of the flares on the early 90’s are riveted to the trim piece that goes across the front. I have not looked into how easy those rivets are to find/replace.

If you have to replace any retainers that contain the studs here are OE part numbers for the fronts that I got from the dealer. There are three per side, each different. Even if the dealer parts are not available or too expensive I have found that having the OE part numbers usually makes it easier to search for aftermarket parts.

Retainer, (front most) right: 55003232
Retainer, (front most) left: 55003233
Retainer, (center/top, maybe same both sides? ): 55003234
Retainer, (rearward) right: 55003236
Retainer, (rearward) left: 55003237

I saw that there are some individual Mopar retainers available on line but didn’t dig into details. It looks like Crown has a retainer replacement kit that covers Cherokee ’84 to ’96 with all retainers and fasteners for both front and rear. Part number 55003232K. It is a little pricy but possibly worth it in time and effort if your retainers are rusted and have broken studs. From what I found in the salvage yard you probably will not find good retainers there. If anyone has tried the Crown kit I would be interested in impression of quality and fit. Amazon has it listed but I didn’t see any reviews.

If anyone wants some good condition OEM liners, PM me. I believe I have a full set of the newer style (came off a 99) and the older style (came off a 94).
