Since u are so scared of used parts and sloppy seconds. Then u must buy everything u have brand new. So u must have bought ur XJ brand new otherwise u could have the same issue with ur stock trans coolers, radiator, heater core, or any of the water and oil passages in ur motor, not to menchen the trans.

Geeez, somebody got there pantie wads all bunched up. Body parts, wheels, anything XJ related u can look at/inspect and determine it's condition/worth while at the JY is a great find.....where the heck else u going to find certain XJ items? How u going to thoroughly inspect a JY tranny cooler.....cut it apart? Well duh. I bet the JY will let u collect used XJ motor oil/filters and sell those to u real cheap. Don't forget to bring your drain pan and filter wrench.LOL
Didn't buy our XJ because I wanted an XJ....just needed a well maintained cheap used vehicle for the kiddo. Since it was owned by the city and I knew they had a decent fleet maintenance program (time & miles) and after a thorough inspection, I bid on it. If the coolant hadn't been clear and green and the rocker arms under the oil fill cap not been silver looking, I wouldn't have looked any further, much less have bid on it. Hope its lasts for awhile, it sure seems like a good one and the JY will keep us in parts for a while....just no sloppy second tranny coolers.

Ya I was kinda bent out of shape the other day. But if ur not confertable using a used trans cooler that's just u. I look on the windshield make sure my donor has a good trans. Inspect the fluid and what I can see of the cooler. Then take it home flush it with brake clean. Allow it to dry and put it in. It has worked for me many many times and have never had an issue. Just saying a little bit of common sense goes a long way when on a budget.

Excellent, u think it's common sense to install a used cooler, I think it's taking an unnecessary risk.....you're willing to accept the risk, I'm not. Ain't it great living in the U.S. of A.

Hey Brutal. Got a specific model of vehicle you get those coolers off? I haven't seen many suburbans in the wreckers that let me wander around. Got some extra cash the wife told me to spend as I please so I'm putting together a JY list.
BTW I love to use JY parts. more than half the crap you buy new nowadays is made in china and is just a heartbeat away from breaking down. No thanks. I'll keep buying stuff that I know was made in North America.

I thought about gettin a medium duty cooler. I figured the tranny has no real cooling system except that radiator tranny cooler.. but damn, if the coolant in the rad is 190-210*, I thought trannys needed 180*. So you never had any issues with cold winter weather and a tranny fluid cooler? I live in VA, and during this past summer I could really tell that the 99-105* days were hitting my tranny hard; but we have cold winters too. I just dont want to kill my tranny.

The factory tranny cooler in the rad is on the cool end of the rad, not the hot 200F+ end. Heat is what kills an auto tranny.

Well that explains why they are more expensive here than in the US. Don't get me started on how Canadian business' continue to treat Canadian consumers like idiots. I was in the import export business for awhile and what they do would send them to jail if it was the US.

The cooler in my off road jeep came out of a mid 80s with a big block and a tow package. I have installed over 10 of them ranging 80s to90s there all vary similar and work good. Just make sure ur donor has a good trans.
As for cold winters here in WI we get a little cold from time to time. I always worm my jeep up and take it easy for the first 10 min or so. With of without a cooler. In a jeep I don't notice a cold trans as much but in the farm trucks (supper dutys) and equipment. Longer shifts are a lot more noticeable. With a cold drivetrain I always take it easy untill it gets worm.
