Success!!
Got the radiator changed out today. Went ahead and changed the fan clutch since I already had it out. Got it back together with no leaks, and it now cools well. As an added bonus, noticed that the original owner had an auxiliary trans cooler installed at some point. Took it on a 15 mile test drive of neighborhood streets, several busy intersections, and about 3 miles of freeway. Ran 190-200. Took it out to dinner and same results. The radiator I bought turned out to be a Spectra Premium replacement unit that was a direct bolt in.

Looks like the PO barfed down the radiator 😳
That's some decent gunk, hope its not coming from upstream because it would glog your new rad the same way. Might consider running those radiator filtration 'socks' for a while first.

I replaced the water pump and thermostat a couple of weeks ago and flushed out the heater core and block as well as I could and didn't notice anything like this. It was only after I pulled the radiator and turned it upside down did I see that.

OK...Here's my experiences...I have three 4.0 Jeep vehicles...an 88 XJ w/gauges, A/C, factory trailer pgk. An 88 MJ, NO gauges, NO A/C & NO electric aux fan.... a 91 Wrangler, w/gauges, NO A/C. The only one that gives me overheating anxiety is the 88XJ w/gauges. Just in normal use, with stop & go traffic the XJ gauge will climb up & down almost to the breaking point....always has.....My MJ in the same driving situation..... the red temperature light NEVER comes on...& there is no assistance of an electric fan.....My Wrangler which has a direct cooling fan (no electric) never climbs over 195.....All three vehicles have OEM components, or similar replacements radiators....So why is all the concerns/complaints/issues pertain to (more so) to RENIX vehicles? I will however admit that both the XJ & MJ plastic fill/overflow bottles will expand from high pressure.....
