On my way home from work I noticed the sound of a pulley giving up at a red light. Turns out when the AC is on it's quite apparent and then turning the AC off takes the grind with it. Is there a bearing inside the unit that I can change without losing freon? Thanks for your encouraging reply!

could be the clutch assembly for the compressor giving up the ghost. I wouldn't turn it back on until you get it sorted out. You don't want it to transport shards through the system and through the condenser. Then it gets really expensive.

There is nothing inside the compressor you can change without loosing the refrigerant. You can check the compressor by trying to spin the front of the clutch without it engaged.

It sounds Like it's time for a new a/c compressor , if you have a problem with a a/c compressor it is better to install a new one .
