The 96 airbag is mechanical and does not have an electronics module controlling it. If it is a driver side airbag only, there will also be no warning/light for it on the dashboard.

Correct. The airbag in 96 was 100% mechanical. The airbag is all there is. Look on top of the steering column. There is a screw there that is used to arm and disarm the airbag for service. Reach in thru the window when screwing with it, just in case.

Mine must be late in the year then, it has the airbag light and says srs airbag on the steering wheel. Idk, I'll know for sure when I tear into it. One bad notch on the cancel cam is pretty low priority.

Are you sure there's an airbag light? There shouldn't be. A seatbelt light is the closest thing I could think of.

Had to double check, yes it has the light. The probable explanation for this is that often cars used to be titied when they were purchased. This may be a 95 model that was purchased in late 94 and titled in 94. Idk when they stopped doing that, but it's a theory

It's kind of dissapointing that it does have one. I'm not a big fan of airbags. They are a great thing at highway speeds, but when they go off at lower speeds they can do more harm than good. Especially if you're an eyeglass wearer.

Thats a ZJ cluster. All ZJ (93-98) came with airbags, and i believe they did use an airbag control module.
Anytime there is a fault in the airbag circuit, or SRS, the control module should kill power to the airbags to avoid any unwanted deployment. The airbag light will come on to alert you of a problem. You may have to see the dealer to get the codes out of it. I dont know how Chryslers handle those codes, if it flashes them or not like a CEL. Airbags are not something to mess with if you dont know what you are doing anyway. I have diagnosed older Fords, but not Chrysler.
