Here's the history of the AMC 6 cylinder engine from it's inception until production ended on the 4.0.

Cruiser mate, this tractor issue apparently pushes one of your buttons. Why? Heard a lot worse and never heard of the tractor story. But now you actually brought it up....

There's a local fencing outfit that has an auger on a Jeep. Pretty bad *** Jeep. Will snap some pics next time I see it in action.

Maybe not the 4.0L I6 but the 4.2L I6 came pretty close to being a "tractor engine":

For 1981, as part of a weight reduction program (aluminum intake manifold, plastic rocker arm cover), the crankshaft was changed from a twelve counterweight design to four, saving approximately 20 pounds. This engine also found some use in farm/industrial applications such as the International Harvester 4000 swather.

Some tractor companies did use car engines. I once bought a small block Chevy that was in a combine. The only thing that was different was the exhaust manifolds were upside down and rotated. I think I would buy a tractor if it had the 4.0 in it.
