alternator conversion questions
Hi to all.
The Hitachi alternator (Jap made) in my rig is giving me problems. I checked contunity in the fuses and checked for power coming to both 60A mega fuses on the passengers side buss. Everything checked out. It will sometimes charge after running for about 30 minutes, but when you shut it off and restart, it's inoperational.
I've had a Thunderbird TurboCoupe, and currently own a 89 F350- Both of which I've done the Ford 3G 130 amp alternator conversion to.
My question is: has anyone done a alternator conversion on their 4.0? If so, what alternator did you use, and what did you have to modify to make if fit?
These Hitachi alternators are a joke. I've been a mechanic for a good bit of my working career, and I can't tell you how many Chrysler vehicles I've swapped alternators out on. I'm sure part of the problem lies in the third world country where their overhauled at, but none the less...
I did a search, and found that folks are using the Delco alternators off of the LT1? That sounds like a plan, especially if it's 140 amp. On the same post, it was mentioned to use a Ford 300 L6 alternator? If so, this is the 3G alternator that I've swapped before. Any ideas?
