alternator upgrade?
I recently went on a wheelin trip where I was having alternator problem's.It was my first trip with my new winch and it got a work out.I did upgrade my battery to a 770 CRA(called for a minimum of 650CRA)when I installed the winch. So I want to upgrade the alternator, without spending four hundred plus dollar's on a MEAN GREEN ONE OR OTHER MANUFACTURER'S.
I recently bought an 2000 xj and in the process of looking for one I noticed several adds that listed a 130 amp alternator as one of it's option's.
So the question is can I swap an alternator out of a newer xj(late 90's early 2000,2001)into my 92?And is there a specific model I need to look for that has this 130 amp monster?Thank's for any info.

You can find a 136A ND in a later V8 ZJ, WJ, maybe WK, and Durango - should fit your needs.
You will have to grind away some at the mounting (about 1/4") to fit the physically larger frame of the alternator. You may be able to source the bracketry for the 136A at a salvage yard - but that would require finding and positively identifying (I'd tell you how if I knew...) an XJ with the 242ci and the 136A ND, and I'm not sure how "different" the bracketry is anyhow.

Now the funny part... most of the HO engines' brackets also have a sleeve. Drive both sleeves back and the alternator has the extra 1/4" it needs.
The alternator is rigid. The power steering pump is the belt adjuster.

I am looking to put a 2000-2001 XJ alternator in my '95 xj. Did you ever succeed at doing this upgrade in your '92 and will it work? Did the plugs in the back of the alternator match up?
I just read about the 136 amp Grand Cherokee Alternator up grade here and was wondering if anybody could enlighten the topic a little. Does it have the same plugs on the back of a '95 and and from what year to what year would you want??

I ended up with a 1998 Dodge Ram 136 amp and she bolted right up! I had to grind a little at the mount for the Bigger alternator to fit but no big deal. I have the Extra juice now!!! Nothing else to do.

I used 98 grand 136 amp nd 4.0 4x4 PART#13469 about $150 at auto zone. the same, except housing size & pulley. Use your smaller pulley for faster spin. Grind brackets to clear alt. Go in with main bracket then alt ,get couple bolts in bracket to block, put bottom bolt in alt. push top in & mark where alt hits block. You need to shave tiny bit off alt. in line with 2 bolts through block to main bracket. I marked front of alt with sharpie then used the bracket as guide.Hope that helps.

That's what gets fuzzy for some people - there were three distinct styles of alternator used in the XJ/MJ (the model I most have to straighten out...)
1984-1986 had the Delco 12SI - internally regulated.
1987-1990 had the Delco CS121 or CS130 - also internally regulated.
1991-2001 had the Nippondenso in the smaller frame size - externally regulated.
No, the ND and Delco don't typically swap directly. And you'd have to wire in a regulator.
Upside? The Delcos in those sizes (12SI and CS130) are the most commonly used for swaps, and therefore are probably the most customisable alternators out there. Getting "amp-up" parts for them is simple, and any competent shop can get you 130-140A without breaking a sweat. I have a CS130 that was rated for 175A, but tested at 198A at full output (nice!)
