Am I going crazy? When I point the two timing gear dots at each other it's NOT tdc!

You need to have #1 at TDC compression and the two timing marks pointing at each other.

Refer to your copy of the Factory Service Manual, section 9.

Lined up after they are installed on the engine and compensated for the droop against the rubbing block on the top? or lined up before you put them on? important difference here because once you put them on, it changes about a tooth in alignment.

The cam and crank gears/sprockets are keyed. You turn the crank so #1 piston is dead nuts at the top of its travel. Position the cam so the key slot is about where yo need it. Assemble the cam, crank, and chain together (sorta) so the dots on the two sprockets face each other. Assemble the group so the crank sprocket fits in its key while moving the cam in to position so its sprocket fits it key. Both sprocket dots should be facing each other.

Refer to Section 9 of your FSM for the factory instructions for installation instructions.

Thank you for this detailed clarification because I had to do mine twice due to this difference and I'm still not sure it is right. It runs FANTASTIC but no matter what I do with everything else I am still getting a Chrysler specific code for valve timing issues.

MAP maybe? Can the MAP sensor affect this reading and code? It is for sure not the distributor, I know for sure I got that right per your great info about the alignment hole. It just runs too good...as if it was indexed to get the best out of a racing cam.

But I am getting that code and CEL...

I will have to get back to you on this one Sir. Everything is unhooked for changing the fuel pump. When I get the tank back in and juice hooked back up I will pull the code for you when it returns. Hopefully the wind don't blow 50 MPH again today.

Thanks!

That's what I did. Just seems odd that when the two dots facing each other it's actually at TDC exhaust stroke. So I have to install the chain with the two dots facing each other, then rotate the engine 180 so it's TDC compression stroke and then point the dizzy at the #1 wire.

It still wont start though. I tested the coil wire with a spark tester and it's not sparking correctly. The coil output is supposed to give a constant steady spark like... [*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-] while cranking. But mine is sparking like this... [*-*--------*-*---------*-*---------] Almost like it's it's only sparking twice per engine revolution when it should be sparking six times per engine revolution. Why the hell would the ecu tell it to do that? I've put two brand new crank sensors on it, that seems to be reading perfectly. The cam position sensor pulses fine too. I just don't get it.

Look up "indexing', there are many writeups. You'll need to cut a window out of an old cap and witness #1, not just guess.

You can determine TDC compression stroke when you see BOTH valves closed (both rockers up) on #1.

^^^^^^ What he said... Find TDC on compression and check to see if the rotor points at #1. That is how I have always done it. You can draw a mark on the distributor under #1 so it will be clearly marked when you remove the cap. If the #1 cylinder is at TDC on compression stroke and the rotor is pointed at the #1 plug wire you are good.

Just past the #1 terminal in a clockwise rotation.
