If the spline count is different you can't swap it unless you buy a new TC input gear, which are usually around $175 give or take, and then you have to swap the gears, which I don't know how to do but may require disassembling the TC. Chances are you are trying to use this TC because it's readily available or inexpensive, so modifying it to fit is probably more work than just finding one that already does.

Novak has some information about it here:
http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge...nput_gears.htm

I do not know if you can use a TC with different length but same spline count input shafts. I suspect that it is a bad idea.

Sigh,.. Everyone posts that novak site. It doesnt tell you ****. Only that the input shaft lengths and spline counts vary up to 1990 and in 1991 are from then on out a 23 or 21 spline count. So one would not know the spline count or input shaft length of a tcase before 1991 until you dissassenble and count and measure correct? I cant someone selling one locally specifically for my year model that is even remotely in ny price range to spend on a used part. When i contact the parts house about this issue, they ask what tcase i have. I tell them, they ask me do i know my input shaft length or spline count, i say no. They ask for a part number, i tell them, they say 880$ for a remanufactured one. I ask what is the spline count and input.shaft length. They say it doesnt say. FML. I go to the local junkyards, all of the xjs have been stripped clean. Im ****ing tired of this transfer case bull****.

This page, 1/3 of the way down. The chart tells you EXACTLY what the spline count and input gear length is.
http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge...nput_gears.htm

21 spline, short input.

No Sir I'm not blind. I can read and comprehend what the chart is telling me and everyone else.

I'm done here.
Best of luck on your project.

I am assuming that you have an AW4 automatic transmission?

The novak site says this to the left of the table: "The AW4 had 21 splines through 1990. In 1991 (the same year the 4.0 HO was introduced) the AW4 splines increased to 23". Also it lists the post AW4 as a 23 spline medium length shaft at the bottom right side of the table. Although I would try to find verification about the length.

So, if you have an automatic transmission in your '95 XJ chances are pretty good that you need a medium length 23 spline input shaft on your new TC.

Since the TC you are asking about is an AMC, it is almost certainly pre '90 (actually '87 or earlier), so chances are quite high that it was mated either to a pre '90 AW4, or to an AX5, meaning there's a good chance that it has a 21 spline short shaft.

It also says this on the Novak site: "If one is not absolutely certain, disassembly and inspection is required." This is true quite often. There are so many little differences through the production years that it's hard to know what you have in your Jeep without opening it up and looking.

Also that same Novak page says: "Because of differences in the cut of the gear, as a general rule, one should not interchange 1987-1993 gears with 1994-present gears." So, no you can not swap the input gear from your current TC into the AMC TC, even if you were willing to do all that work.

If you are tired of all this TC BS, go call someone at AMC and complain. Oh wait, they no longer exist.

I'm so sorry, please ignore all of our previous posts. Yes the AMC transfer case will bolt right up and work flawlessly with no problems or issues whatsoever. In fact all transfer cases the world over are identical, you can use any TC you find.

You're a brilliant individual.

Don't be mad you screwed up and got the wrong case. Even smart people screw up from time to time so you shouldn't feel bad.
