"Bad battery and/or cables/connections."-Cruiser54 nailed it.
I had a loose ground (the one from the battery to the chassis, it was falling apart at the ring terminal..I replaced it, CEL went away, starting issue gone and hasn't been back since. Thanks to all who responded!
FYI-I do still have the lead with the fusable link. I guess when I did the wiring upgrade to heavy ga., I remembered reading about it and left it.
