Default Another Salvage Yard Haul

Got a notification that an '89 Cherokee just came into a local yard (email came about 4pm). Had a list of things to pull in case they were still there. So I arrived the next morning and found it. Apparently someone got there before me and took most of the dash apart. They had taken the cluster and some other dash bits. It was hard to tell since everything they took off was dropped onto the floor and front seats. No matter, I didn't need to the cluster.

While the temperature was not too high, the Sun was blazing. It got hot out fairly quickly. The XJ was black (maroon interior) so it was really hot inside. After almost 2 hours, I couldn't take the heat anymore so I took what I did grab and checked out. I had water in my XJ so I sat there drinking in my AC for about 20 minutes before heading home.

So the haul was a bit less than I hoped. Mostly due to not being able to continue in the heat so I had to leave stuff behind.

Stuff I grabbed:
Pass manual seat base (rocker type)
Air box cover (mine is cracked)
TCU
Cruise Control Module
Speed Sensor for CC
Upper Speedo Cable for CC (lower one too but was 4wd, mine is 2wd)
Intermittent wiper module

Stuff I couldn't get:
Brake Switch (w/CC)
ECU
EGR and solenoid
Evap Canister
Front Driver window regulator
Ignition Coil

There was a ridiculous amount of trash, dirt and other debris inside that made working in it "so enjoyable". Once the car warmed up, the smell was "intoxicating". All the cars are up on concrete piles so they are off the ground. Nice that you don't need jacks but makes it hard to work on the engine or under the dash.

Sorry I didn't get pics of it all but I left my phone in my car so I wouldn't risk breaking it, or it disappearing. Hard enough already keeping an eye on my toolbox.

Weather forecast has things getting a bit hotter over the next few days. I might head back to see if my remaining parts are still there. I have a few things for my son's Mazda Protege5 to grab as well.

Anyway, the haul:

They were not this clean when I took them. Took quite a bit of effort and degreaser to clean everything especially the seat base.

Incidentally, I looked up the CA smog history for it. Last time it was smogged was 2006. So it's either been out of state or in some other yard a l-o-n-g time. Pics of the dash on the yard site showed the dash still complete.

I have picked over a few carcasses, and have many spares

2 things that well and truly paid for themselves were an AW4 trans, and an entire D30 axle assembly

Cost $100 each, already removed, private wreck

If I did not have these parts on hand, I would have been off the road for quite some time, and probably up for well over $1000 from a wrecker

Having a '96, there are a few things its vital to have, especially a PCM, also a fuel pump

I've been trying to focus on parts that would render my XJ inoperable due to a part that's not easily found. Being in California, that puts emissions components at the top of the list. EGRs are very hard to find, even used. The evap canister is even harder to find.

First couple of trips was all about fixing my own up a bit. Seat cushions, seat frames, interior trim and stuff like that. Then moved on to switches, exterior trim, some sensors and whatever I could think of that was still there.

Renix XJs don't appear often in yards local to me so I need to jump on them as soon as they are released. Clearly, I'm not the only one.

the PCM will be gone, thats a super vital part

I have a complete spare running '96, and it is packed to the max with spare parts

If one has enough room and time, they are worth more in parts than whole

I recently dismantled a 70yr old engine that had allegedly been rebuilt over 30yrs ago but was seized, cost me $100 many years ago

I have had the pistons soaking in penetrant for at least 5 years ago, but it was still stuck, took me about 20 hours to strip every nut and bolt, the good parts will nett me $1-2k, would have been more but some parts were not so good after all that time

The engine was probably seized because the builder definitely left out a spacer in the water pump, which caused the roller bearings to fail, and it must have overheated

I sold 3 parts in the water pump to 3 different Countries, as they are very rare and expensive

I've got a parts '96 & apart from the bits that are now on my '98 & '99 (+ the WJ I had a brief flirtation with but got rid & even the KJ which was supposed to have been a DD suffered a long succession of not entirely unrelated issues) it's as was 'cos all I've ever managed to pass on was a sprayer jet & a headlight bezel. I've offered various bits at 10-50% of what's being asked on FleaBay but absolutely no interest. At the moment it's providing useful storage, but I am getting a little tired of the sight of it - especially as it means I have to work out in the street.

The following Parts will be well worth hanging onto if you decide to strip it down and get rid of the carcass

PCM, fuel pump assembly, complete driveline, steering parts

with older rare parts, you often cannot give them away till someone needs one, then they will gladly pay asking price

I have had some items on eBay over 12mths before someone needs it

One time I threw away a bunch of really nice International D1100 doors, shortly after, a dude was foaming at the mouth looking for some...i didnt have the heart to say

Thanks, I'll bear that in mind, but let me think, now:-
PCM: wouldn't have bothered - 'til I learnt it was year specific!
fuel pump: wouldn't have bothered, although I recently drained the tank so maybe - but for what I could ask for it, can I really be bothered?
driveline: the trans was almost out, before I found it wouldn't work in the '99 (although it may yet donate its pump), the TC was briefly in the '98 & if I can fix it with bits of the trashed one from the ''98 it can go back - & the '99 can have its own TC back. Drive shafts are earmarked as spares.
steering: the box & tie rod are on the '98, so is the drag link, for the moment. The knuckles will be, as they're like new compared with the '98's. & the damper leaks, so not much there.

Of course there's all the export bits, like door pockets, tweeters, 120mph speedo, etc, that while rare in the US nobody actually seems to want - nobody here does - 'cos they've all got them.

I should close by admitting I've never actually put anything up for sale - I really can't be bothered, mainly because of the poor response I get to offering stuff to people that they've said they wanted/couldn't find..

Maybe one of these days, when I've run out of things to do on the '98 and the '99's finally got a working trans (+ all the incidentals from standing for 6 years) . . .

Saudade,
If you make it back to the yard I could use the seatbelt warning module for my 90 XJ.
I went to a local yard today for some vac fittings and they had a well picked over 93 XJ. I didn't even think to see if the module was even there. Might be the same part, I'll have to go back and take a look.
