So I'm due an oil change and have a slight lifter tick. Is it worth me buying a bottle to throw in the crank?

I have no plans on stripping the engine down any time soon and can happily live with it as it is. I'm just sure I've previously read it can get rid of the ticking.

Is the ticking continuous or just on startup?

Personally, I dont see a problem with using a product as its intended. As many times as I've used seafoam, I've never added it to the oil. I've always either put it in the gas tank, or sucked it right into the intake via vacuum tubes. So if you think its a sticky or ticky lifter I would feel like using any product that can be added to the oil wouldnt do any harm. If it didnt fix the tick, it may at least clean up the rest of the inside of the motor and remove some other stickyness...

Are you sure its a lifter and not just a valve clanging around? Where is the tick coming from? Left or right side of motor (viewed from standing in front of the jeep)

I'm going for a good drive later on so I'll see how or if it changes.

I'd say it sounds towards the back of the engine but at the mid to top.

It's something I've grown used to and thought I'll try Seafoam when my oil is due. I can certainly this weekend try to find the source with a stethoscope.

A rather speedy update. From ticking at idle for about 5 minutes when I last replied, to a minute down the road the tick has gone.

The 5 minute idles wasn't from a proper cold start as the engine was running about 2 hours prior.

I'll still keep an ear out during my drive later.

Back mid top.... I have the same type of noise and I thought I had some internal ticking going on as well. Turns out there is a part in there that has a ticking noise 100% of the time the engine is on. Some people can hear it, some cant. Its on the starboard side of the motor, near the back middle top-ish. I cant remember the part or what it does right this second, and I haven't confirmed on my own engine, but I feel like that may be the ticking I'm hearing in mine as well.

So the update on the drive, no ticking noise at all since the original minute of driving. I'll report back how it acts in the morning from a proper cold start.

Next time you start it and you hear the tick, shut it off. Wait 10 seconds or so and restart. Click gone?

So yesterdays loud tick/clicking noise hasn't returned but a much quieter, what the original post was about tick is present. I was a bit late today on my way to work and had to help my brother after so didn't have a chance to listen to the engine after todays drives. I'll keep posted on what I find.

So far I haven't heard it again as loud as my double post earlier. Yesterday however you could hear it slightly while inside the car. turning the engine off, waiting 10 seconds and starting back up again made no difference to the noise. Normally it is just a very little noise but this was a tad louder than normal. Today it's back to not hearing it.

Do you have Marvel Mystery Oil on your side of the pond?

I can get a litre of it about the same price as the Seafoam I was looking at. It's certainly not an on the shelf product but obtainable.

Chuck a quart of that into the crankcase and drive it for 500 miles.
Monitor the sludge in the engine with a flashlight through the oil fill hole.
Your oil will get darker as the MMO dissolves the crud.
