This might start a flame war, but I would get rid of those Champions and switch to NGK V-Powerd #3459. When I changed my plugs in my first Jeep I put in what the guy at NAPA bragged about the Champion Copper Truck Plugs, after about 6000 miles they were shot very slight misfire. The Champion Copper are awesome plugs just not for the 2000 and 2001 XJ with the Ignition Coil setup, it's just way to finicky. The V-Powered are not the expensive either no more then 15$ for all six. That might help along with changing the transfluid if you choose to do so. Which everyone here seems to see as your best bet. Also I am going by your avator info if you have a distributor keep the Champions.

I'm gonna call bull**** on that. I put Champion Coppers in my 01 XJ last May and probably put 8500 miles on them and my Jeep starts and runs great. I'm debating as to if I should put a fresh set in again this May. How many miles between plug changes...20K?

according to the factory schedule for the 2000 and 2001 xj, spark plugs are recomenned every 15k. seems like way to often to me, i would try and get 20-30 out of them or do them once a year

speaking from experience regarding other vehicles, trans fluid that color means there is debris in the pan. i'd pull the pan and check for yourself. i have managed to keep transmissions alive by frequently replacing the fluid, most of the time having to pull the pan to remove additional debris in the process.

either way, count on addressing that trans soon for a permanent repair.

Exactly, as for Cropduster I can only speak for the Champion Truck Plugs my XJ didn't like them not sure if there different from the Champion Copper, might be the reason they discontinued them. But I change mine every year, I only put on around 10-12k miles a year. Also changing plugs in a 2000-2001 XJ is the easiest thing takes about ten minutes. Back on the subject of the transmission, have you decided if you going to drain and repeat or take it somewhere, I am really curious how this turns out.

We can all agree to disagree on plug choice. It isn't the most important decision we will make in our lives.

I do agree with using NGK copper plugs for the 00-01. IMHO, the gap holds up better over the long haul with the coil pack ignition system. Champions work just fine in the 00-01, but the gap widens more than the NGK plugs do when you get more miles on them. So for that reason, I favor NGKs for that ignition system.

I recommend Champion copper plugs for 87-99. NGK copper for 00-01.

Use Dex/Merc III compatible fluid. Don't use ATF+4, regardless of the Chrysler TSB stating it is the proper fluid. Some (not all) have had issues with ATF+4. Nobody has issues when sticking with Dex/Merc compatible.

And don't forget about all of the other fluids. Transfer case, differentials, cooling system. If the vehicle looks like it was neglected, it was.
Haha. The coolant was terrible. New core. Both diffs were nasty. Done. This tranny is one of the last things on my list other than mods.
