Hello all I need some major help! I have a stock Jeep cherokee XJ 1999. I turn my Jeep on and it cuts off after three seconds. The line with the key through it is on the gauge every time this happens I would have to do that for about three tries to get it running. This would happen once every few weeks. (Just hoping the problem will go away) Now, the problem has since gotten worse my Jeep only cranks and it won’t turn over with the line going through the key on the dash. One more thing my fuel gauge and my voltmeter come on every time I turn the key even without literally trying to crank the car on. Can someone please help me and any help is appreciated. Thank you this is really giving me a headache.

What does your key look like, the light with a key on your cluster is an alert that a foreign key is being used to start, and will kill the motor after about 2 seconds if running. The fat grey keys are an indicator that the key you are using is chipped for sentry. The standard black key is not.

It sounds like the xj is having trouble reading the key . If you have more than one key change keys and see if the problem is still there .
