Default Assistance in tire choise

Hello everyone, I've been looking around for some new tires for my XJ. It's a 4.0 from 92 with +200k miles.
Special detail: It's a German "Performance Edition", which means it has 255/60r15 General Grabber HP tires at this time.

I want to upgrade the tires, choosing something that would do better off-road. I like to drive through wet terrain and shallow mud, so just beefier will do.

Any suggestions? What's doable without upgrading to a lift kit? Thanks!

Try this, just slightly more diameter than your current tires but will fit easily with no lift required. Size is 225/70R15, only 1cm larger than 255/60r15.

Since you're in Belgium, I wonder if you have the same tire selection that we have.

Most of the times, the tires are round and black.
I can not order the General Grabber AT/X, for example.

I've found that my wheels are 7 1/2 j x 15 h2. I'm not sure what the ideal with for these would be. Any other suggestions?

Also, after comparing size with my tires, I found 235/70r15 to be 28" in size, would this be an upgrade compared to 225/70r15.

Surprised you can't get Grabbers 'cos they're readily available here in the UK & I'm sure I've seen them on-line from sellers in Germany & Italy.

While 235's are a size larger than 225's, not sure that's an upgrade, they are both supplied as original equipment (maybe not in '92?), albeit on 7J's.

My '98 has (aftermarket) 7 1/2 J's & 31x10.5x15 MT's which look just about right. Personally for 7 1/2 wheels I'd go for 265x70x15's (a very common size) but is there some reason not to stick with the 255/60's?

I have my second set of GY Wrangler 235's on ... and couldn't be happier... mud, dirt, concrete jungle, and snow approved.
I've used these in snow as well and w/ my LSD rear end... can not complain for the price. Are there better out there? probably..but not at the price point of these puppies

If you still have the stock suspension, before changing to a larger diameter tire,
verify that the springs are not sagging. Measure from the wheel axis to the bottom
of the plastic fender flare.

The front should be 17.5 inches (44,4 cm), the rear 17 inches. (43.2 cm)

Stock height should have no problem with up to 29 inch tires. Some 30 inch tires will rub.

Whoops, I quite forgot (to take into consideration) that mine has a 2" lift, so disregard what I said about 265/70's.
Still don't know why OP doesn't want to keep the size he has - or what he really means by "upgrade"

The reason I'm changing tires sizes is because this is actually a size for regular or sports cars. So a decent tire, capable of driving on a rougher terrain, isn't available.

So what I'm looking for, is something that works better on a rougher terrain.

235/65 x 15 are the same diameter & 1.5" narrower but seem to be a peculiarly van size - although one of the more aggressive M&S versions might suit your purpose.

Next up is 215/70 x 15 - but I doubt there are many AT's in that size, which takes us back to the 225/70's already suggested, although I'd be tempted to go for 235/70's (a very common XJ size) for, probably, an even greater choice.

If off-road tyres are hard to come buy in Belgium (a country not exactly crawling with 4x4's from my observations) you might be better off going on-line - or slipping over into Germany.

Agreed there UKXJ....
Online could be a viable source... just have to be careful on the date-codes on the tyres... Might have to poke them a bit when you place the order to make sure you can get the freshest set possible and not ones that have been sitting in a warehouse for the last year.
