^This, if you want a "real" filter you can plumb one into the cooler lines (if you use a spin-in adaptor it makes it real easy to service) but there is no "fine-particle" filter in the transmission, just a screen as others have said and there is no prescribed service interval for this "filter"/screen, the only time the FSM ever recomends replacing the "filter"/screen is as part of the diagnosis for problems (and if there are enough "chunks" in the fluid to plug up the screen you probably have major problems).

If you have a leaky gasket and have to pull the pan anyway it might make sense to replace the "filter"/screen since you are already in there and the gasket/filter usually come as a kit but otherwise a few drain and fills or "flushing" via the cooler lines will work fine.

Okay, I hear to you loud and clear and appreciate your response, but I just bought the filter and gasket kit for $42 this afternoon . I have a choice to install it or return it, what is recommended?

Its still a filter none the less. Do u go to the store and ask for a "pan gasket and screen?" No bumbasses. U ask for a pan gasket and filter"

Could it benefit from better filters, yes, but its still a filter. A screen is whats on your oil pickup in ur engine.

Ill bet they also ask if u got a/c when u ask for a ujoint.

If u have a 93 grand cherokee it could very well have an aw4. So your statement is invalid.

HA, Meant to be humorous. The point was, having to talk dumb to the auto parts store and call it a filter.

Return it if your gasket is not leaking.

There's a lot of words people use that tend to not mean what they think it means. In this case, you. It is a screen and you're the dumba** for calling it a filter. Now if you're gonna believe a parts store guy who probably does not know the differences about xj and zj(yes I've heard a part guy ask a customer with a zj if it had a aw4) and think that cruiser54 doesn't know what he's talking about(15+ years working at a jeep? Cruiser knows lol) then you're the major fail here.

You'll be asking for a screen. Brass or Stainless, your choice.

Well, if it's clogged you have problems that a fluid change won't fix.

I want everyone who has found a clogged AW4 SCREEN to post a photo of it in this thread, along with the symptoms that prompted the removal of it.
