Really? That's the direction you wanna go?
I just moved back to the US from overseas, I don't even have my own tools here yet, where I'm staying (while house shopping) am only a guest. If I accidentally made a mess on my own garage floor that's one thing.. but it's not my house.
I cracked my first engine block open for a full rebuilt at age 15...and that was many, many moons ago. This isn't my first rodeo..... just being respectful of someone else's house.

yeah... if this were my house and had my tools, I would've had this done already.
I do appreciate all the info. and will use it.

I purchased a 98 XJ for my daughter last year as a surprise for her 16th birthday. It was pretty rough as I did not have a lot to spend and also wanted the vehicle to be a project for both of us. I had a few minor things done before we gave it to her so I would not be worried about her driving it right away.
First order of business was oil and filter change as well as tranny service. I had a local tranny shop I trust drop the pan, change the filter and replace the 4 quarts or so of drained fluid. No flush. Prior to the service the fluid was very dirty and dark black. Have since performed 3 separate drain and fills and the fluid is finally coming clean. No issues with the tranny prior and none since.

Normally that's what I would've done, but this XJ is still fairly new to me, and since I don't have any documented service history from the PO, and that I plan on having this one for a long time, I want to make sure that everything is done right. I've got a file started for all my service/replacement history on it. So at least it will be detailed starting with me.
I forgot how bad it is in the US with the shear lack of detailed service history on vehicles. Where I lived overseas, if a vehicle didn't have a full, detailed service history all the way back from brand new regardless how new/old the vehicle is, good luck on selling it. You'll only get scrap value for it...as no one will want it with out that. And that goes for the entire recommended servicing schedule from the manufacturer to every oil change and set of spark plugs you put in. Very **** retentive, but it does make it nice when you're buying a pre-owned vehicle from a dealer or private party there.

Not to beat a dead horse, but for clarification, there was never a recommended interval to replace that "screen".
Factory recommendation for normal use was drain and fill every 30,000 miles.
15,000 miles for severe service like a taxi, regularly towing or mail delivery.

I think I recall the show. I could get most US shows where I lived.

Yeah... overseas is a big place. lol. I lived and worked in Australia for several years. Cool country, culture, and people.. but it just felt like the right time to leave and come to the US.
Plus as many problems as the US may seem to have, believe it or not, it's much tougher to make it there than it is in the US. On the surface it seems like all is well over there...but they're headed for some worse times than we've seen here in a very long time... so it was time to make that choice. Wasn't easy. Lots of good friends and had made a good life there. But tough choices have to be made in life... so here I am.

There's plenty that would keep me from living there, but it's great to hear how they are with maintenance documentation. I wonder how other countries are about this. With the US's rich history of "car culture", it's a shame folks today aren't better at maintenance and documentation. It seems that there are fewer of us holding the torch for that culture these days, and we're getting older.
What is it that is leading them to hard times? Political? Economic? Just curious...
