aussie locker instal: removal of carrier?
Hello all,
I'm getting ready to purchase aussie lockers for both front and rear on my 2001. I've heard this can be done while the carrier is still in the housing...I have 3.55s so is that true?? I know with lower gears, the ring gear won't allow you to do this because it gets in the way, but if I don't have to remove the carrier, I'd say I could do each axle in under 45 mins..
any input?

Had to take mine out but Ive got 4.10's so I dont know if the different carrier and thicker ring gear would make a difference. Also, I had to grind my carrier just a bit to get it to fit in there. Honestly I'd say it would be quicker to install it with the carrier out. It took me 30mins and that includes shaving the carrier

Had to remove my carrier and the ring gear to get the pinion shaft out of mine but, I have 4.56 gears. You really won't know until you take your cover off and have a look at your carrier.

I have 3.07's and I had to take the carrier out to do my aussie.I dont see how you could get the roll pin out,or the shaft that retain's the spider gear's out with it in the housing. And I dont think there is any way in hell to get the locker in the carrier without removing the ring gear. It's a tight fit to sqeaze it in there with out the ring gear on it.I dont think there is a short cut to this one, just my thought's.good luck

Keep in mind that the D30 has different carriers for different sized ring and pinion ratios. I believe that 3.55 and below (numerically) are one size and 3.73 and above are a different size. Not sure which size would be asier to get an Aussie in but I would think the 3.55 and lower would be a possible fit with it in place.
I would remove the carrier anyway if just to inspect everything and evaluate their application to a locker.

mine lock-right just arrived, i've got 4.56 gears
and I'll have to remove carrier, but mine main concern is
adjusters on bearing caps, do I just remove them and then
torque them to secific toque on assembly spec or what?
so if some one can tell me exact procedure
I've installed lockright on dana 30 with 4.56, but there are no adjusters
on bearing caps and is straight-forward
so before I take it apart would like to get some help
thanks

You'll know rightaway if you'll need to remove the carrier. The first step in installation is to remove the pinion shaft and spider gears. If you can't get your pinion shaft out past the ring gear.....guess what.....you're pulling the carrier so you can remove the ring gear to install your locker.

i have no problem pulling carrier out, but what about adjusters on
bearing caps, once I remove them, to what torque I have to torque them
on when putting it back together, do i need to set bearing prload
and check backlash, thats my main concern before I open it up?
thanks

Your XJ rear axles don't have Adjusters like a Ford 9 inch or a Toyota 8 inch. Jeep axles have adjustment shims. Sometimes the shims are inboard of the bearing. If so, they won't come off when the carrier is removed. Sometimes the shims are outboard of the bearing race, though. Just make DARN sure that all shims get returned to the same place after the locker install and properly torque the carrier bearing caps and you're good to go.

97 Dana 30 3.55:1 I took out the carrier and removed the ring gear. 4 bolts and pop the carrier out. Plus then you can get a good look at the bearings and side caps. I ended up having some pitting on the bearing caps and replaced them. Wouldnt have known that if i didnt take out the carrier.
