To the OP,
Start your rig and remove the connector from the CTS at the water neck. This will tell the PCM that your coolant temp is high and it will complete the ground path for the Aux. Fan Relay.

Huh? X3 -The standard cooling system on a 98 will have an efan as they all had AC unless specifically ordered without it.

After unplugging the CTS and if the fan does not come on, jump it with a 12v power source to rule out a bad fan. They do just die sometimes.

i had the same problem the fan on the right was not working and my jeep got severely hot at idle i check the relay crossed with jumper wire the fan kicked on so it seemd as if everything was fine there next we looked at a sensor the coolant temp sensor there was 2 obviously we swapped out the one on the side of the radiator still after a warm up the thing dident seem to kick on but it got hot so the thermo was looked at and it seemd old maybe it was jamming not working right so we replace that still dont seem to ever notice that secondary fan kick in and my car still gets hot idk i think my plastic bottle is leaking slightly. either way im stumped as to why ive never herd it even after ive replaced a few things i payed good money on that sensor too when i say right i mean from the front of the car looking not to confuse neone

I see it seems no one knows were the A/C clutch relay is located. I to am over heating at this time. I have checked the aux. fan it burnt out . replaced with new. And now it will not turn even in red line. The a/c clutch relay has to functions it controls the a/c on one end and the aux fan with the other. I to would like to know where it is located can not find anything in the manual or online. I also ran the fan straight to battery and it works so I no the fan is good. Could someone please just tell use where this bad boy is located I would appreciate it and I'm shore they will to.

This data does not pertain to an OBDII XJ. The OP has a '98.
