True, the OP doesn't have to swap in a new 4x4 tranny, but with plethora of Cash for Clunker XJ's in the jy's now he does have a wide variety to choose from. He might be more inclined to simply remove the tranny he currently has and simply slip in a complete tranny and transfercase from a donor 97 4wd XJ.
Of course, if you have a lift in your garage, a tranny jack and another couple of hands, let's say at least 150-200 for the tranny, and 3 or 4 hours to remove all the shifter/wire stuff and the bell housing bolts, without counting the mess of fluid that will pee out of the cooling system etc etc
for you, all this is easier
than leaving the damn thing under the jeep and just remove the tail, which he already has, spending nothing (and don't tell me that 150 less in your pockets don't hurt, think at that boat anchor you bought), and you can do all this in your driveway with the jeep on a couple of jackstands, alone and without the mess.

Swapping a tranny is not that difficult, with a little foresight and planning. Tranny jacks can be rented at minimal expense, drip pans are in expensive. providing food and beverages to some friends in exchange for a helping hand is a very common thing around here when you need an extra set of hands.

Hahaha lol, you say arrogant to me, that's a joke... If he wants to make a "jeep repair party" he can still do that with the jeep on the pavement, saving his money for beer and chips, or in your case he would have to add another 15-20 for the tranny jack rental (so 150 + 20 =170)
And for the hands he will need a pair for the TC as well, although it can be done by one person, but i am big and can lift and mount my TC alone, don't know him.
Swapping a tranny is not that difficult, true, but not swapping a tranny is easier or at least it is cheaper.

Yes, you are an arrogant jackass.
I never told him to do it my my. I'm pointing out that there is more than one option. The OP is free to do the swap however he chooses.
Don't bother replying, you've got nothing of interest to say to me. Welcome to my Ignore List

Hi Blue.
Actually the TCU does not comunicate with the ECU or PCM at all.
The TCU inputs are:
A)TPS, that on the XJ with AW4 is a double unit, one for the ECU and one for the TCU
B) speed sensor, located in the tail extension, (it's not the CPS)
C) NSS, that is part of the tranny
D) Brake switch.
The outputs are the three valve body solenoids.
Also the TCU has a self diagnostic program that can be read with a DRB II tester.
Am i correct Blue?

Swapping an XJ trans isn't that bad, assuming you have some moderate mechanical skills. Making it sound like some massive undertaking is sort of silly. It's no harder than most other rwd vehicles. I can drop mine in 2 hours at the most. Two guys with air tools could do it in no time.
