Default AW4 shift ranges

I'm going to ask a nube question. I am quite familiar with the 42re and know what to expect when I downshift for more power or going down hills, but this AW4 has me questioning what the different range points do. It seems like unless you're holding a steady 55 or higher on flat ground OD is too high and makes it lug on hills. When I use 3rd gear, I swear it shifts 3 times. And when I downshift to 1-2, it will decelerate pretty well until about 15 mph, then it downshifts to 1st. Is this normal? If it is, I'll get used to it.

I can't tell you from here if your transmission is within spec, but those numbers sound about similar to mine (which only had 49k miles when I bought it...and runs like a top). The 4th gear (OD) is indeed pretty tall on these vehicles, and does not do that great on hills. The RPMs are just a little low (about 1800 at 55), it gets quite a bit better at 60-65mph where you are more in the 2000-2200 range. It shouldn't take much to make the kick-down activate on a hill. Perhaps yours is not kicking down the way it should. As for feeling 3 shifts for 3rd, (and probably 4 shifts for OD). That is most likely the torque converter lock-up clutch. It feels like an additional shift point (just a little more subtle). As far as dumping down into 1st gear on a deceleration (engine braking) at around 15mph, that I'm not sure of off the top of my head, but that speed sounds reasonable.

Sounds about right but it wouldn't hurt to go ahead and adjust the tv cable. Also if you start out in 1-2 it shouldn't shift out of 1st until ~4K rpm.
