AW4 strange shifting issue, 95 XJ
Hello all. Wanted to run a problem by you guys and see if anyone has had a similar issue. Like the title says, 95 XJ with the AW4 transmission. If you put it in "D" it starts out in 1st just fine, then shifts directly to 4th gear. If you put it in "3" it again starts out in 1st just fine, and then shifts directly to 3rd gear. Anything faster than normal 1st gear range, moving the shifter from 3 to D will shift it to 4th, even at 10mph. At lower speeds, heavy throttle will still downshift to 1st gear just fine, then back to either 3rd or 4th depending on where I have the shifter. On top of all of this, the torque converter does not lock up in 4th gear at any speed.
I've been driving it like the for nearly a year now honestly, with it going from 1st to 3rd, and manually using 4th when I am going fast enough. I figure it's time to properly fix this issue since I've become attached to the vehicle. My thoughts are that a couple of the transmission solenoids could be bad, but multiple solenoid failures seems unlikely and doesn't explain being able to shift into 4th at 10mph. Another idea is if there is some sort of transmission control unit that is known to go out on them that I could pick up and try changing out. It's a very clean vehicle that runs, drives, and shifts fine. Just seems to be confused as to what gears to use and when to use them.
Anyways, love to hear what you guys think, and if anyone has ran into a similar issue before. Thanks in advance.

have a look at the AW4 solenoid pattern in the FSM, or elsewhere, sounds like you might just have one bad solenoid No1 or 2, cant remember which
test the Ohms from the connector by the dipstick
you need the manual, or just check the archives on here
