If the fluid had never been changed then you probably screwed up by changing it with that high of milage. Here is a link to back my arguement.

Hope this helps to answer a few questions. I was always told if you didn't have the records from PO on maintenance to never mess with the trans if it had no issues present.

How do you check or fix low line pressure on the trans?

Line pressure is partially controlled by the TV cable..
Adjust the TV cable first, though I dont think it will fix your problem its worth a try.
I posted how to do it on the bottom of the first page..

Update: I fixed the issue of the slipping on take off on my XJ.

The problem was the TCU. I went to the Junk Yard and bought a used TCU for 10 bucks. I plugged it in and PooF the problem was gone.

Thanks to all with all the tips.

Default Almost same issue

So my XJ will not shift into R without a warmup if the weather is below 65°. Even with a warmup, when I take off in D, it will take 1/8-1/4 mile to shift to 2nd—RPM irrelevant. It doesn’t slip though, no issues with hills. I adjusted the TPS and reset the TV cable. Fluid level is right and it doesn’t smell burnt. No leaks, cleanest 88 I’ve seen.

I was about to post that this sounds like a TCU or TCU fuse problem.

Having to shift manually and having no TC lock up is the biggest clue.

Bad grounds can also mimic this issue.

Just realized this thread is 8 years old.

You might be better off starting a new thread.

a fluid pressure check will indicate if the internal trans pressure has fallen too low, there is Torx fitting on the case to allow fitment of a gauge, fittings & gauge can be bought cheaply of Ebay etc,
or a trans specialist can measure it for you

In the case of 1-2 Upchange when cold...mine will not initially upchange till over 3400 RPM, with lightly feathered throttle.
To get around this, I take it up to 2800RPM, back completely off the throttle for a second or two, then lightly back on, and it does the change

My Trans was occasionally failing to grab reverse (it had been unused for +18mths before I got it.)
I fully flushed trans, and run it so the fluid is at the high mark when hot,. it seems to be behaving..Inshallah lol

I havent been inside an AW4, but on some other auto trans, there is hard o-rings, deep inside the drums, that prevent high pressures leaking away,
they either wear, fail, or score the drum after a very long time, so adequate pressure cannot be held internally. Reverse needs the highest pressure, as per the FSM
