ax-15 question
Got a buddy with a 93 XJ that has the ax-15 in it. He said it's hard to shift from 1-2 and 2-3, but fine for the rest. Any thoughts as to why and possible cures? Thanks, guys!

cures? Not sure. It depends on why its doing that... I wonder if his syncros are worn? Does anyone know if we have yellow metals in the AX-15?
I run an Amsoil GL-4 in my 240sx (I know it has yellow metals) and its made a world of difference with shifting.
Another thread just answered my question. We have brass components. make sure he's using a GL-4 ONLY. I'm going to change mine with the Amsoil I use in every car I have.

These are Aisin Toyota gear boxes and so I suspect that they are using yellow metal synchros.
I would say synchros especially since the shifting becomes easier in the higher gears which are closer in ratio spacing to one another requiring less intervention by the synchros to match speeds.
It would not hurt to also try changing the gear box oil and check for metal shavings.
It could also be the clutch is worn or needs adjustment especially if it is the original.

Mines a pain to shift into 2nd and 3rd too from worn out syncos. There isnt much you can do about it except change your fluid and double clutch it into those gears.

I just realized that we are talking about a 93.
That gearbox oil is probably REAL old which would make for hard shifting as well.
With the Jeeps characteristic seperate Drain and FIll plugs Make sure to tell your friend to Make sure he can remove the gearbox Fill Plug FIRST !
B4 removing your Drain plugs from the gearbox OR Transfer case for that matter..
You don't wanna ruin your weekend.

Thats' good to know if the filler won't open fer ya !!!!
I do check the level of the fill afterwards via the filler ... before buttoning things back up.
Speaking of such, my Mobil-1 is GearBox oil is about 3 years old.
I am switching to Royal Purple this time...for all of my lubes.
Engine, Transfer Case, Gearbox and Rear Diff.
I luv my Jeep ~!
