Nothing suprises me any more o this jeep. I have some free time before work and i went out and crawled under the jeep. Cracked the fill plug loose on the trans and stuck my pinkie in. Bone effin dry. Pulled the drain plug and pulled maybe 3/4 to a whole quart of black motor oil looking fluid with dirt and crud in it. Any way to flush this thing before i put good fluid in? Also i know on some tjs that you can fill it through the shift boot. Just pop the shifter off? Is this true for the xjs also?

75w90 API GL-3 or GL-4 is the real spec. 75w90 GL-5 can be used in a pinch but long term use will cause (further) damage to the synchronizers. 5w30 or 10w30 can also be used if you're in a tight spot.
If you save your transmission the best fluid you can run is Redline MT-90, Pennzoil Synchromesh, or Royal Purple Synchromax. The fluid spec for the AX-15 I guess is no longer trendy so we're left with specialty oils, but they really do work great
If you get grinding while sitting still and the clutch pedal down, your clutch isn't releasing all the way. It should shift the same as if the engine was off.

Wow! Good thing you looked eh
Flushing I would just pour 5w30 or 10w30 through it with the drain plug out. Maybe let it idle in neutral.
You can certainly do the same fill method on XJs, it's just a pain in the *** because we have interiors. The center console and 3 shift boots need to come out. It's worth it if nobody's ever been under there before to get the crud out, but not exactly something you want to do on a routine basis

Well i flushed the system with 2 qts of 10w30 (cheapo brand had sitting around) And filled back up with redline mt-90 local high performance shop stocks it . I can put it in first and move about 5 ft then take it out of first and into 3rd it still grinds. Im guessing that i need to drive around and let the oil circulate before it will do much so ill drive it to work and post back later. Thanks everyone for the help so far.

well drove 100 miles today. 3rd gear is better still a small grind without double clutching, 4th still grinds like crazy without double clutchin, 5th has no grind what so ever. And im pretty sure the throwout bearing is going bad, it has a weird noise if you push the clutch in from about a 1/2 in to about 2 inches. Sounds like a small rattle/faint grind.
