The dana 35 is also know as the Dana "turdy 5"... That might give you an idea. Its just a weak axle, what year is your xj?

That's a 8.25 you can tell by the part that hangs lower than the cover..

yea your right, brain fart over here. I actaully just picked one of these up. I have a dana 35 in my rig and Im swapping in the later model 8.25. If you have a newer model xj, that 8.25 should have the 29 spline count which makes it somewhat strong. not a d44 but way better that a d35.

yep your good to go. what size tires you plan on running? Ive read that a 8.25 can handle up too a 35in tire and a 33in tire with a locker.

im going to put a 4.5in rough country lift and run 32x11.50 is there anything extra i need to do thanks

I feel so stupid and I am so boned right now..... this whole thing got me thinking (read bad/good thing). Well I was all set to do a gear change next weekend with my dana 30/35...... only its actually dana 30/ chrysler 8.25........ I am so freakin pissed! Now, since the 8.25 is a better axle I guess I am gonna have to buy gears/install kit/maybe locker for it in order to do this gear swap...... anyone need any dana 35 stuff?

Haha smae thing happened to me. You can see where I first wrote on this post and I said I had a d35.... Well it's actually a 8.25. I was surprised cuz I have a 93 and thought most had a d35. Good thing I haven't bought my new gears yet.
