Am I seeing a CH 8.25 in the rear and a Dana 30 upfront?

A lot of folks call it the "Turdy-Five".

not necessarily true. i mean you don't want to go much bigger, but i have wheeled my xj on 33's for a couple of years, and both my tj's have 33's and been wheeling them on some pretty difficult rock trails for years, and they're daily driven all with lsd.
i know a couple that wheeled with 35's but open diffs.

with that being said, i have seen a few broken shafts. and definitely don't lock it.

you'll be fine.
just don't let it bounce if you get stuck on the rocks.

Haha.. Watch the vid on YouTube if you need proof that 35's can do the job! Basically an XJ with a d35 on 35" tires making its way thru DEEP snow. The trick is, the guy knows he's got a d35 under him and he's not beating on it. I guess what I'm sayin is, you can run a d35 all day long, as long as you don't beat on it much.. Now, this isn't always an option when wheeling. I've found myself with the pedal to the metal a few times and I don't wheel hard. So I guess be prepared by knowing what terrain your getting into and make sure to have recovery gear, tools and another jeep or two never hurt no one! Look into swapping a Chrysler 8.25 in- its a direct swap and the 8.25 is almost comparable to a 44! Good luck and enjoy, man!

The Chrysler 8.25 is not even close to a D44. The 8.25 has smaller axle shafts that are actually smaller than the D35 at the c-clips. But the shafts are slightly bigger in diameter but not by much. You can put heat treated axles in the D35 to build a super 35 that is as stong as a D44.

If you plan on running tires over 33" on rough trails, sooner or later the 8.25 and D35 will snap axle shafts and leave you stranded. Especially if you are crawling. Good thing is a lot of the older XJ's from around 86 - 89 had D44's front and rear and you can score them at a bone yard for a fair price but in need of a rebuild.

Wrong...the D44 and C8.25 are very similar in strength, the D44 has bigger axle shafts (30-33 spline) and a C8.25 (27-29) the C8.25 does have bigger axle tubes. not trying to be rude i'm just trying to inform you.

i have very little experience with the D35 but i don't think the D35 can ever be as strong as a D44, there is just more metal on a D44 and please please correct me if i am wrong, i'm defuring to you on the D35 topic because i just don't have enough knowledge on them.

Comparing the d35 to a 44 is impossible. Have you ever even seen a 35?! It looks like a freaking toothpick! You can upgrade it all you want, it's still a turd.

Wrong. No XJ ever had a d44 front axle.
