axle question
New to the forum and new to the jeep world. Just wondering how to determine what kind of axles I have underneath this thing. I'm not sure of all the dana configurations out there and I dont know how to tell them apart. I have a 99 xj sport automatic with the 4.0l. Any help with that would be awesome. Great site!

Congratulations on the Jeep! You'll like this forum, it's helped me out a lot.
You can identify the axles based on the differential cover. Front's going to be a Dana 30. Rear is one of these: https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/rea...382/#post98896

So what is the hot tickit to beef up the dana 30 and chrysler 8.25. What are the weak points? Is the chrysler axle a "c" clip rear end and if so, is there a fix for that?

What do you plan on doing with the jeep? Daily driver/ weekend wheeler, or something over the top? I have seen some rigs with the Dana 30/Chrysler 8.25 handle some serious upgrades and not fail. If you plan on building a monster you will probably just swap them out.

Most likely leaning towards the rustys 6" long arm and 33's. I want to lock the front and rear with arbs but that might be down the road a while. Most likely doing some gears to get her back to life after 33's. The wheelin' I do is pretty average but not easy by any means. I also still want to ba able to drive it around town too.

The 8.25 Has c/clip axles with 27 spline up until 1997 when it was upgraded to 29 spline. I know many guys who upgraded to chromoly shafts or to 31 spline shafts. You might get away with stock shafts locked if your easy on it. 33's are not too crazy of a tire. However if you are like me and most others we go with what our budget allows. The Dana 30 is a pretty good front axle and should be able to handle your 33's. There are a couple types in the xj. They have the vacuum disconnect model and the solid shaft model. The vac model is less desirable being that it adds another weak point.

Google Chromoly axle shafts for your axles. The 8.25 does not have a c-clip eliminator available, like other similar axles, but it's a some what stout axle, there a many options to upgrade to stronger axles, so my advice, is before spending the dough for ARB's decide on your axles. The Dana 30 is a good axle, many people are running 35" tires on this axle, upgraded of course.
