3.5" to 4" will work fine in most cases.

OEM back spacing is 6"-7" or so I'm told so you are reducing that and that puts your tire further out away from rubbing on your lower control arm.

So the number is how far the wheel mounting surface is from the back edge of the wheel.

IIRC the stock 8" rims have a 5.5-5.75" backspacing.

For 31x10.5 tires this is somewhat excessive.

A rim with 3.75"-4" and is at least 8" wide, will work fine on a mildly lifted (3-3.5") XJ with minimal flare trimming and new bumpstops.

Stuffing them...well I have not gone full stuff. And I expect some extra trimming for that. BUT mine do not rub on the LCA at full turn.

Trying to run 35/12.50x16's on my rig. My issue is finding cheap steelies to run with 4.0", 3.75" to 3.5" backspace in a 16" wheel. Has anyone else had this come up?

Someone gave me the 16" tires so I am trying to make them work with low $$$. I'm running 32's on 15" wheels with 4" backspacing currently. I'm tying to make the jump to 35's, It just maybe easy and cheaper in the long run to buy tires for the 15" wheels I have.
