Bad PCM ?
Hello again
So I have a couple of questions, but first some background:
Driving along apx 50 mph, under no load ( generally going down hill ), and engine stumbles. No CEL etc. Recovers and goes about another 1/4 mile, and stumbles / dies. All dash lights on. I pull off on a side road, and pop the clutch, but nothing, Engine won't catch. Dead like the plug was pulled. I tried to start it of course, but the engine made a strange high pitched whine while cranking. Called for a tow ( only 2nd time in 20+ years so really can't complain ), and while waiting decided to check the spark coming off the coil. Small and orange, so I figure I'm on to the problem.
When I get back home, I check the maintenance & repair log, and see the the alternator is original ( 406k, but who's counting ). Figure that it's the problem and pull it. Doesn't sound good spinning, and it fails the test at the parts store. Order a new one along with a coil and crank sensor. Installation goes great, but no change at all. Still weird sound while cranking. Crank etc is all spinning with the starter. Strong fuel smell, so I'm thinking it's not getting an ignition signal. And considering the mileage and the fact that I've always lived off a dirt road ( lots of bouncing every day ) it would make sense that the PCM might have crapped out.
So am I missing anything, and any recommendations for a PCM supplier ?
Thanks much !
Note: Engine only has 150k on it since complete rebuild. No other issues with vehicle till this.

take a look at the "wobble" of the distributor shaft.... sounds to me that the PCM or ECU probably isn't the problem....
I have a 1996 and had similar symptoms and it ended up being a worn distributor...
hope this helps

What I have found in 25 some odd years of Jeep ownership that there are ghosts in the machines. They will lead you on a game of hide and seek. Some people pull the parts cannon and fire away, others start with noggin poking and maintenance updating... Wires chaffing, connectors dirty and rusty, grounds not grounding, battery cables with hidden corrosion under the insulation....etc etc...
lot of help and tips here https://cruiser54.com/
hope this helps
