if you want to separate the tie rod end from the knuckle, just hit the knuckle right where the tie rod goes in with a hammer. it will just fall right out.
you may have to give it a few good whacks with a big freaking hammer, but it will pop it out.
make sure you only hit the thick steel arm where the tie rod goes through.

Pickle fork will work, BUT you'll probably damage your boot and have to replace your tie-rod end.

I always thread the castle nut back on so it sits just flush with the top of the tie-rods threading and essentially "drop" my 3lbs. sledge on it; always works and I've yet to damage a tie-rod; also keeps the joint from separating violently since it only moves a 1/4" or so... The pickle fork will definitely work too but sometimes ruins the boot.

i spent 30,000$ on automotive school and they said hit it with a hammer cause it doesnt damage anything. unless ur a sissy and then it hurts ur feelings when your buddies start calling you nancy, all a pickle fork does is ending up junking any part its near. and screwing the nut back on works but i can bust threads or mushroom the nut if ur not careful on some parts u may need or have to reuse
