If you have an earlier than 91 xj your 4wd wont work. Its a vacuum canister that yoyr front axle uses to lock the front axles and make them work. Your heater also wont come out anywhere but defrost.

Keep it. Find a new spot.

trace the lines, cut them and relocate it under your hood

I relocated mine just to the right of the blower motor. Also cleaned up some of the excess vac. lines. Let me know if you want some pics.

On my 93, i was able to cut the line and put a golf tee[ghetto style] and it didnt have any effects on the vent output or cruise control

On my 97, it did. Now my Heat will only come out of the defrost[but will redirect the air flow on deceleration cause of the increase of vaccum], and cruise has a little trouble keeping up. I gotta relocate mine. I've yet to do that after i put my winch bumper on

That would be your vacuum canister.
Your XJ will need the stored vacuum to activate any of the HVAC vents, and on older XJ's with vacuum disconnect axles...to engage the 4wd.

On most Xj engine compartments there is not alot of extra room for the large canister.

Try relocating it in front of the harmonic balancer like this:

Only thing is you will need to lengthen the vacuum line, there should be a "T" in the line between the battery and the inner fender. Simply pull the line out from there and put in a longer one.

NOTE: Use stainless steel hardware to mount it.
