It looks like you have slight leakage of battery acid from the cell vents/fillers.
Have you topped up the battery recently – and put in too much distilled water?
Other possible causes include over charging or the vehicle being positioned at an extreme angle to cause the battery acid to leak.
My advice would be to wipe off the leaked acid, taking care not to get the stuff on your clothes (throwing away the cloth). You could prize off the two battery vent/filler caps and take a look at the battery fluid level and remove a quantity if any of the cells are over full.

One or more of the cells may have froze. Have seen this before in a weak battery. Battery acid WILL freeze if the temp gets low enough or the acid solution is too weak.

How old is that battery?
I think it is time to shop for a new one.
Life and proper efficiency of the engine management system starts with the battery so replace it if there is ANY question. They aren't that expensive.

While I would agree with tjwalker that the battery looks like it has seen better days, looks can be deceiving. If the battery can happy crank/start the engine, why spend money on a new one?
This side of the pond, a new battery will cost anything from $100 and up – I suppose it depends on how wealthy you are as to whether such an amount represents an expensive purchase.
While on the subject on batteries – in the olden days of my youth, batteries would slowly die, cranking the engine slower and slower – giving plenty of warning of their impending end of life. Just recently, Mrs Hymie's Renault Megane battery gave up the ghost with virtually no warning – others at work have also reported sudden vehicle battery failures, perhaps battery technology has changed to cause this effect.
I wonder if others have seen sudden battery failure in recent years.

The sticker on the battery is dated 7/09 if you look in the upper right so I would assume the battery if fairly new and should be alright as long as a cell hasn't ruptured. I would tend to agree with Hymie, temp or angle as the cause. I have had new batteries leak after a day of wheeling with severe angles. Another possibility is that your system is over charging the battery.

+1. Check your charging voltage; it should be around 14.4 volts. If it’s higher, you probably have a bad regulator, and it’s overcharging (= overheating) the battery causing the electrolyte to spill out the vent valves.
