Default Also the earth is flat

2AWG cable is an American standard design. ThE ShIeLdInG is meant to support long runs and higher power than a car puts out, it's part of the design, there is a reason the welding industry uses it for spans that go hundreds of feet. High fidelity. I have used it in commercial applications, and large scale construction projects (like sky scrapers and production welding). 2AWG will not lose a noticeable amount of anything in a span that's ~20 feet or less. In precision electronics with small gague wiring, wire length and shielding play a big part, yes, but that applies to more technical applications than simply supplying raw power from a battery to starter and alternator and back. In less than 5 feet of 2AWG, you are out of your mind to think its not effective. More conduction in a smaller space = higher current fidelity. You sound like someone who doesn't like to be challenged. Just look up the math of amperage loss over distance. Google probably has something for you. Also, shielding works both ways, keeps foreign contamination and charges out while keeping the same in. Considering 2AWG is shielded with basically rubber in a single layer, because there are no other cables inside of it to interfere, your point doesn't bear weight in this application, although it does in others.

In short. Your not wrong, but in this application and wire type, your not right.

In other news, the sun rose this morning.

How much current are you talking about? Oh, that's right, you don't know. Here's a clue for you (one of many you need): The size of the cable required depends mostly on the current its expected to carry and the distance it's expected to carry it (along with other factors). Statements like yours are completely meaningless. Except, as I said, to demonstrate that you know nothing about the subject.

You have ZERO clue what you are talking about. High current applications is exactly where those factors matter the most.

Effective at what? Lightening your wallet, yes. Doing something good for your starter, no. Not even one tiny little bit.

It's exactly like running a 4 inch fire hose to water your garden, with a standard hose nozzle on the end of it. You can talk all you want about how much more water the hose can carry, but if your neighbor sees you out watering your lawn with it, he's going to get it on video so people on YouTube can laugh at you.

Your hose analogy does not do the science justice. It seems like you're trying to use humor to mask your ignorance. You are increasing potential load by going up in gague. As long as you aren't incorporating in resistors and capacitors, you are not in any way doing anything that's going to be a boon to the toys you slap on the circuit. If you are arguing about whether you need it or not, that's one thing. It's a perfectly fine thing to do that won't do anything less than make things run the way they did originally or better in regards to electricity.
You aren't going to cook your starter by doing this upgrade, that's not how it works. I have a factory starter with 230k miles on it and I've had this upgrade for 6 long years. It disengages after the crank cycle completes on startups, thus when the alternator puts out juice, that juice goes to the battery not the starter. Seriously, I can't believe you think this way!? I have a background in electrical engineering, among other things. There are no instances in any fields where anything you have said makes sense other than the fact it costs money to do this upgrade and that 6 gague will get you by! The reason most companies don't go larger in wiring is purely because it becomes expensive, so they go with the bare minimum set by regulatory requirements. "The size of the cable required depends mostly on the current its expected to carry and the distance it's expected to carry" you forgot an important word, MINIMUM, THE MINIMUM SIZED CABLE. You are wrong about this. I may not have the clearest thought flow because I'm not forum savvy, but for the love of God, stop giving these people bad intel! Even from an economic standpoint, if it didn't do anything it wouldn't be such a popular upgrade in vehicles beyond just the xj/ 4.0 models. If this does fry your starter, you probably needed to replace it anyway!

You have NO clue about the science.

Electricity is what I do for a living. I am a senior engineer for a major company which anybody on this forum would recognize.
I have both the formal education and nearly 4 decades of experience behind me.

You should just shut up and maybe learn something.

Shutting this thread down as both urine streams are longer and more yellow than required.
